Metrics
Metrics are the quantifiable measures of the value your solution delivers to a customer, expressed in numbers the Economic Buyer would recognise and sign off against.
Metrics are the numbers that prove your solution is worth buying. Not your product’s numbers, the customer’s. A 30% shorter sales cycle. Four hours a week handed back to every engineer. A churn rate cut from 8% to 5%. If the figure describes what changes in their business, it is a Metric. If it describes your feature, it is a brochure.
The question Metrics answer is the one the Economic Buyer will ask whether you are in the room or not: what do we get for the money?
The mistake is to treat Metrics as a line you fill in after the demo. Sellers write “efficiency gains” in the CRM and call it done. That is a word, not a Metric. A Metric has a number, a baseline and a timeframe, and the customer has agreed it. The biggest gap I see is between a Metric the seller believes and a Metric the customer has said out loud. Only the second one moves a deal.
Here is how I use them. Metrics are the bridge between the pain you have implicated and the urgency the deal needs. Pain tells the customer something hurts. Metrics tell them how much, and what fixing it is worth. Put the two together with a Champion who will carry the numbers to the Economic Buyer and the deal starts to move. Without them, your proposal is a price with nothing on the other side of the scales.
