Discovery
Discovery is the ongoing work of finding out a customer's pain, Metrics, people and process, carried on through the whole deal rather than finished in one call.
Discovery is how you earn the right to the rest of the deal. It is the questioning, listening and testing that uncovers what the customer is trying to change, why it matters, what it is worth, who decides and how. Done well, discovery is where every letter of MEDDPICC gets its first real answer. Done badly, it is a forty-minute interrogation from a script, followed by a demo the customer did not ask for.
The question it answers: what is actually true about this customer, as opposed to what we hoped was true when we booked the meeting?
The mistake is treating discovery as a stage. A box between “qualified lead” and “demo” that you tick once and never revisit. Deals change. The Economic Buyer gets replaced. The budget gets cut in half. The Champion’s rival takes over the project. If your discovery stopped in week two, your qualification is a photograph of a deal that no longer exists. Discovery never stops. The best sellers I know are still discovering in the contract negotiation.
How I use it. I go into every conversation with a point of view on the customer’s business and a short list of what I do not know yet. The point of view earns respect. The list keeps me honest. I ask about consequences more than features, I ask the same question of more than one person, and I write down what the customer said in their words rather than my summary of it. Then I check the deal against MEDDPICC and the gaps tell me what to discover next. If I cannot name a gap, I am not inspecting hard enough.
