Sales Kickoff

A sales kickoff, or SKO, is the annual event where a sales organisation aligns on strategy, targets, product and methodology for the year ahead.

A sales kickoff is the one time in the year the whole revenue team is in a room together. Strategy, targets, new products, the comp plan, the methodology, and usually a keynote speaker, an awards dinner and a hangover. I have sat through a lot of them, on both sides of the stage, and the good ones are easy to spot. They change what people do on the Monday after.

The question an SKO should answer: what are we doing differently this year, and does every seller leave knowing their part in it?

The mistake is treating the kickoff as the message. Leaders stand up and talk about urgency, about hunger, about a big year. Then everyone flies home and the pipeline looks exactly as it did in December. Urgency is an emotion, not a message. You cannot tell a team to be urgent from a stage, and you cannot email it to them afterwards. It is built from how leaders behave in the weeks that follow: consistent, truthful, clear about consequences and commitments. A kickoff that is not followed by that behaviour was a party with slides.

How I use it. I treat SKO as the launch of an operating rhythm rather than the rhythm itself. If MEDDPICC is being introduced or sharpened, the kickoff is where the whole team hears the same definitions, works real deals in the room, and watches the leadership team run a deal inspection live, including the uncomfortable bits. Then the deal reviews start the following week and do not stop. The two sessions I would never cut: the A Players telling the room what they actually did last year, and the leadership team saying what they got wrong. Both are more useful than the keynote. Including mine.
